Severe Thunderstorm Warning - Southeast Queensland for DESTRUCTIVE WINDS and GIANT HAILSTONES

For people in Logan and parts of Ipswich, Gold Coast, Redland City, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane City and Moreton Bay Council Areas.

Issued at 2:08 pm Sunday, 17 November 2019.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 2:00 pm, very dangerous thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Caloundra, the area southwest of Caloundra, waters off Caloundra and Landsborough. These thunderstorms are moving towards the east to northeast. Very dangerous thunderstorms are forecast to affect Maroochydore and waters off Maroochydore by 2:30 pm. Destructive winds and giant hailstones are likely with this storm. Other severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Greenbank and Amity Point. They are forecast to affect Beenleigh, Logan Village, Point Lookout and waters off North Stradbroke Island by 2:30 pm and South Stradbroke Island, Jacobs Well, mouth of the Logan River and Russell Island by 3:00 pm. Large hailstones and damaging winds are likely with these storms. Hail to cricket ball size has been observed with the Sunshine Coast storm.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should: * Move your car under cover or away from trees. * Secure loose outdoor items. * Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees. * Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm. * Beware of fallen trees and powerlines. * For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 3:10 pm.

Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
