Severe Thunderstorm Warning - Southeast Queensland for HEAVY RAINFALL and DAMAGING WINDS

For people in Cherbourg and parts of Ipswich, Gympie, Somerset, South Burnett, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane City and Moreton Bay Council Areas.

Issued at 7:09 pm Wednesday, 6 January 2021.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 7:00 pm, very dangerous thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Ipswich, Moore and Linville. These thunderstorms are moving towards the east to northeast. Very dangerous thunderstorms are forecast to affect the area west of Kilcoy, Highvale and Samford by 7:30 pm and Brisbane CBD, Strathpine and Kilcoy by 8:00 pm. Other severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near the area northeast of Kingaroy and Cherbourg. They are forecast to affect Elgin Vale, Goomeri and the area east of Murgon by 7:30 pm and the ranges between Gympie and Murgon and the area east of Nanango by 8:00 pm. Intense rainfall that may lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding and damaging winds are likely. Amberley has recorded 86mm in 1 hour Beaudesert recorded 83mm in 1 hour to 5:30pm Woodlands Road (W of Laidley) recorded 57mm in 1 hour to 5:30pm Highfields (N of Toowoomba) recorded 68mm in 1 hour to 5pm

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should: * Move your car under cover or away from trees. * Secure loose outdoor items. * Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it's flooded, forget it. * Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees. * Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm. * Beware of fallen trees and powerlines. * For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 8:10 pm.
